Emeralds, The Birthstone of May

Posted on Thursday, May 10th, 2018 at 4:47 pm by Richard

For several thousand years, emeralds have been one of the most iconic and precious gemstones around. They have been admired by humans as far back as Babylon around 4,000 B.C. Emerald’s are easily recognizable with their stunning and deep green hue. They are the birthstone for those born in May.

This precious gemstone is made of a variety of mineral beryl and gets its green color from trace amounts of chromium and occasionally vanadium. Emeralds are graded by the four C’s: color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Color is the most important of the criteria with clarity being a close second. Their color hues can range from yellow-green to blue-green.

In ancient times, emeralds were mined in Egypt, India and Austria. Today Columbia is the largest producer of emeralds and Zambia is the second largest producer, although emeralds can be found all over the world.

  • In addition to being the birthstone of May, here are just a few interesting facts about emeralds:
  • They are the symbol of life, beauty and enduring love.
  • They are associated with immortality and youth.
  • Wearing them on Thursdays brings luck.
  • They are the anniversary stone for the 20th, 35th and 55th years of marriage.
  • They enhance inspiration, patience, memory and understanding.
  • They are considered a symbol of faith as well as a papal jewel, worn by many popes.

Emeralds are delicate stones, so it’s important that you care for them properly. Do not use commercial jewelry cleaners as they can damage the gemstones. Instead, stick to lukewarm water with mild soap, and then dry with a soft microfiber cloth.
